GOOD NEWS

WEHTEC is out + finding readers

My debut, WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO EDDY CRANE? A MEMOIR AND A MURDER INVESTIGATION, is out now. The news is all good — and too much for one newsletter to contain. For now…

After that first Kirkus review, the trade publications kept on raving.

  • Shelf Awareness: “…fluidly blends genres…while maintaining a propulsive, thriller-like pace. Crane navigates the ethics of memoir writing with startling honesty, never shying away from her own mistakes…. WEHTEC is a rare work that manages to be both a rigorous piece of journalism and a tender, heartbreaking meditation on the lasting bond between a father and a daughter.”

  • Book List: “Crane is a lifelong writer, from prolific pen pal writing to journalism, which shows in her pristine and affecting style. Her book strikes a perfect blend to appeal to both memoir and true crime readers.”

  • Publisher’s Weekly: Crane seamlessly blends suspense and pathos in this heartrending true crime memoir. Readers will be rapt.”

Screenshot of Amazon hot new releases that shows my book, What Ever Happened to Eddy Crane? as number one in the category of biographies and memoirs of abductions, kidnappings, and missing persons. The new Patrick Radden Keefe is number two.

As of April 11, WEHTEC was #1 in a subcategory of biographies/memoirs on Amazon.

🔥 Chicago Review of Books 🔥

I’m thrilled with what Chicago Review of Books had to say about WEHTEC.

Crane’s gritty and illuminating style of storytelling is both compelling and delightfully rebellious, allowing her to address the limitations of each genre while she writes beyond each one

David Simon shared some kind words on Bluesky.

This is a tale that had to be told. Kate Crane could not allow it to be otherwise and she has wrestled long and hard with the past and emerged with a beautiful and honest book. Buy it. www.yahoo.com/entertainmen...

🎙️ A conversation with Forbes 🎙️

When I joined the call with journalist Brittany Lewis, she had seven pages of notes and told me she’d read much of my book on the PATH, aka the Jersey City subway. Made me so happy… I rode that train for years and wrote about it in the book. Brittany did a ton of work to prepare and we had a good talk.

🎈 How to help my book take off 🎈

What does it even mean for a book to succeed? I want the chance to write a second book (which I’ve started).

Rate and review How much do Goodreads and Amazon ratings matter? I think no one really knows. And they do matter. If you can get over to one of those sites and leave a rating, I’d appreciate it.

Buy the book Thank you to everyone who has done so. I've got a stash of vintage Baltimore postcards that I've been mailing as preorder thank you’s. (If you think I forgot your postcard, please nudge me.) Now that the book is out, I’m glad to send a thank you postcard to anyone who’s bought the book.

Post about it on your socials My books Instagram is katecrane.books. Feel free to share those posts…

Request from your library There's usually a place on the library website, but you can also call or email them.

I love the library

Often, people will tell an author they're going to borrow a book from the library and apologize as if it’s a dirty secret. Never apologize to me for this! I love the library! I fell in love with reading at the library. I could read as many books as I wanted because of public libraries. I am a writer because I had access to unlimited books through school and county and city libraries. Support your local library. Get cards at as many libraries as you can. Read my book through the library. I am overjoyed to see my book popping up in library systems — and holds! Holds on my book! Thank you to all my friends who have requested the book. If you haven't, take a moment to check your own library system. If you don’t see WEHTEC, put in a request.

There are 20 holds on five copies of WEHTEC at the San Francisco Public Library

More soon! Thank you for reading
